How to Read a Pattern!
You're inspired to make a new frock. You pick up a pattern. It says "very easy" 1-hour pattern, but when you open up the instructions you quickly realize that this is going to take more than an hour just to figure out what the heck they're talking about! You're no dummy, but the pattern language just isn't making sense! It isn't you. It's them.
Pattern companies still assume you've already learned terminology and techniques as if you were in a 1960's home ec class or learned from the matriarch of your family on your way to becoming a good housewife. If you pick up a pattern from the 60's or 70's, you'll see that patterns haven't changed much at all to accommodate the modern sewer of either gender.
In this class, we will walk you through every step of pattern preliminaries from understanding pattern lingo and layouts, grain, matching prints and how to make simple pattern fit adjustments to hands-on sample practice with pattern markings, interfacing, facings, stitching darts, gathering, under stitching, stay stitching and many more inside secrets to making your next garment project look and fit great!
NOTE: this is a one-time class. We will not be making an actual garment. For a more in-depth course in working with patterns from start to finish of a completed garment, try our Garment Sewing From a Pattern Series.
