Annie's Picnic Quilt Series

The design for this picnic quilt was inspired by the amazing textile work of Bauhaus artist Annie Albers. Her beautiful weavings celebrate simple shapes and limited color palettes, yet the patterns seem complex and different every time I encounter them. A quilt destined for picnics should be easy to make, but capable of revealing new patterning even when you spill potato salad on it.

This class project allows you to combine scraps as well as newly purchased fabrics because it’s made out a smallish-scaled squares. It also will introduce you to bias binding and curving quilt corners, a cute and easy trick for adding a bit of whimsy to a quilt. This 3-class series will walk you through the steps of cutting the fabric, sewing the rows, quilting and finishing the quilt. First, we'll focus on cutting the squares and piecing them together. Students should come to the second class with a pieced top so they can focus on basting, quilting, and binding their creations (depending on your progress in the first two classes, Malka will help you decide whether to make your own bias binding from fabric, or use the prepackaged bias tape we have available at Stitch Lab). The third class will be for quilt finishing - anything not completed in class #2! Homework required! Level: Beginner/Average.

Prerequisite: The Beginner Quilting Series, or equivalent experience. Not sure? Please email and we'll discuss!
